Mayor Margaret Finlay of the Southern California city Duarte has started a “Biggest Loser” program that aims to raise awareness about the high rate of obesity in the country along with helping those affected to lose weight. There will be a final weigh in on March 29 that will showcase the results of the challenge. One of the goals is to help create similiar programs in other cities in the country.
In this weight loss competition, all Duarte residents older than 16 will weigh-in secretly. The winner will be able to choose between $100 (straight out of Finlay’s pocket) or one year’s membership at a Duarte Fitness Center.
Finlay herself has long battled her own weight loss issues. She has lost over 40 pounds in the last few years, and she aims to lose an additional 25 pounds. Finaly is also concerned about the rising number of obese children. The hope is that if adults set a good example, the children will follow suit and learn the value of living a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
Councilwoman Lois Gaston is one avid supporter of the program. She expects to emerge a healthier person and has been working hard to achieve her weight loss goals.
