The formula for weight loss is simple: expend more calories than you consume. But for those struggling with obesity, it might not be so simple. Dr. George Schauf challenges conventional thinking when it comes to fighting against overweight problems in his book, The Calorie Conspiracy. This self-described “part-expose, part self-helf book” introduces a concept that seeks to provide a viable long-term alternative to traditional caloric theory.

According to Dr. Schauf and the scientific evidence he has studied, combating obesity is more than just counting calories or using up more calories than you consume in a day. His technique called QQF stands for quality, quantity, and frequency. Dr. Schauf argues that what you eat, how much of it you eat, and how often you eat it has major effects in your ability to lose weight. His book is an attempt to improve the rising obesity rates in the nation.

The book also discusses how improper weight loss diets can have adverse effects on the amount of vital tissue in the body. Another topic of discussion is the Never After Breakfast Theory. All in all, this book seeks to challenge the conventional weight loss methods that are predominant in the market today. If you want to read about something new, this book can help you do just that.

The Mayo Clinic Diet was fairly popular back in the way, but it had been tained in recent times by fake fad diets that purported to have the Mayo Clinic brand. Now the real Mayo Clinic Diet is back, and it’s better than ever. Their bestselling book The Mayo Clinic Diet was assembled by a team of health professionals to collect the best natural weight loss practices around.

The book details five good and bad habits that contribute to weight loss and weight gain. They are as follows:

Good Habits
1. Eat a healthy breakfast
2. Eat fruit and vegetables
3. Eat whole grain
4. Eat healthy fats
5. Exercise!

Bad Habits
1. Too much sugar
2. Snacking (except on fruit and vegetables)
3. Eating too much meat and dairy
4. Eating out frequently
5. Watching TV while eating

Abiding by the good habits and eliminating the bad habits can contribute to natural weight loss steadily. Additional habits they recommend are: keeping a food and exercise journal and setting goals. How appropriate then that they also have a Mayo Clinic Journal to go along with the book. Very nice!

The next part deals with living the good life. They include up to date information on the food pyramid and how best to abide by it. It also contains additional resources that can actively aid in your weight loss goals. Remember, the information contained in the book is clinically tested by a team of weight loss professionals.

People make plenty of dietary decisions everyday. What to eat? When to eat? Where to eat? How you decide determines how healthy and balanced a diet you will have. It can also help in controlling your weight.

There are many healthy meal plans available to you. One such plan is the 40-30-30 macro-nutrient principle. The concept behind this is to have a meal of 40% carbohydrates, 30% proteins, and 30% fats. It is very important to have a balanced diet, as each of the compounds are necessary for our bodies to function optimally. Carbohydrates provide energy, proteins build muscles, and fats create energy during times when there is no energy source.

Also popular are low-carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins Diet. The principle behind this diet is to avoid refined carbohydrates, in particular sugar, flour, and corn syrups. The body’s metabolism is then improved to a level where more calories are burned and excess calories are removed.

No matter what diet you choose, it is equally important to regulate the amount of food you eat. You can have a diet composed of healthy foods, but if your servings and portions are in excess, then the problem of excess weight gain remains.

Digestion is an important bodily function that we must consider. Taking the time to chew your food is a must. The faster paced lifestlyes in the modern world translates to a tendency to rush our meals as we move on to more important work. You must remember that enjoying a meal and reaping the health benefits that arise from proper nutrition more than compensates for the time spent on it.

The mantra of three-square meals a day has been ingrained in our minds. But it is better to eat smaller meals more often in order to aid digestion. Binge eating is something that you must generally avoid. Another good tip to remember is to avoid eating 2-3 before going to sleep. The food eaten at that time will not be burned off and will be stored by the body.

Finally, when faced with the decision of where to eat, you have the option of eating at home or eating out. Fast food is an attractive option for those who have busier schedules. It is also less healthy as you don’t have full control over the food that you eat. Fast food typically has foods high in sugar and fats. Sodas are typically bundled with value meals, and these drinks contain a high amount of sugar.

There are times when we can’t eat at home due to time constraints, but the least we can do is to be selective when it comes to eating out.

LighterLife is a weight loss program tailored specifically for clinically obese individuals. One of its methods is a very low calorie diet (VLCD), wherein patients buy foodpacks from the doctor supervising them. These daily foodpacks contain an average of 800 calories. Foods include shakes, snack bars, and soups.

A process called ketosis is induced along with the diet to burn fat stored in the body for energy. Ketosis is not without controversy as some doctors link it with chronic starvation and call it potentially life-threatening.

A counsellor is also assigned to guide a group of participants. Cognitive behavioral therapy is used to discover reasons for overeating, and solutions are consequently developed in response.

It is very important for participants to be under close care by the assigned doctor. Checkups every month are a necessity. Samantha Clowe, who was following the LighterLife plan, died from a heart condition. She was eating 530 calories in a day as part of the VLCD plan.

There are a lot of sceptics out there. We look at our favourite celebrities and their diet endorsements with the fine print at the bottom of the screen stating “results not typical”.

Why would I bother going on some restrictive diet if I there was no guarantee that I would have the same results as the celebrity? Not only would I be harming my body through starvation mode, I wouldn’t look like the celebrity image of myself in my mind! The question is, are any seemingly healthy celebrity diets really healthy? I have found a few options which can be healthy and promote long term weight loss – and who, celebrity or not, doesn’t want that?!

A recent weight loss trend that has taken over the airwaves is the Low Carb Diet. There are so many guises that Low Carb Diets take, although two of the most well known are the Atkins and Zone diets.

I remember the early 1990’s when I went on my first low carb diet. I had very little knowledge about how to lower my carbohydrate intake, so I just cut all carbohydrates other than vegetables and a minute quota of fruit from my diet. I was also vegetarian at the time, because I wasn’t being smart in replacing my nutrients, I wasn’t eating enough protein. Fat, in my mind, was my nemesis! So I cut that out too.
From this experience, I learned that yes, I lost weight on a virtually no carb diet, but I also lost muscle mass and chunks of my hair! Not a very sexy look at all! My body remained flabby despite the numbers on the scale going down. Disheartened and hungry, this low carb diet was neither well thought out nor practical long term.

I looked to the svelte celebrities I admired so much: people like Jennifer Aniston and Cindy Crawford, who are athletic and strong, a look I found beautiful. These celebrities followed the healthy low carb option, the Zone. This plan teaches you how to balance your carbohydrates, proteins and fats and there is no forbidden “fruit” or carbohydrate deprivation on this plan. You never feel like you’re on a diet or hungry when in the Zone as it is basic, healthy, balanced eating. Moreover, it’s sustainable!

I have since developed my own version of this macronutrient breakdown that works for my lifestyle and my taste buds. I am feeding my body all the vitamins and nutrients it needs, and I have a thick mane of hair on my head once again! I also have a stronger physique which can sustain the rigourous exercise regime I put my body through daily. Finally a healthy celebrity diet that is actually healthy and definitely worth trying and sticking to!

There is the common thread between Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig and it’s not the healthy celebrity diet endorsements. Both of these plans are based on low fat portion controlled eating.

Weight Watchers has been incredibly successful for many celebrities from The Nanny’s Fran Drescher to Playboy Playmate, Jenny McCarthy. This programme provides a balanced meal plan based on a point system. Each food is given a numeric value based on its calories, fat and fibre content. Most people are to stick to approximately 20 points a day. It doesn’t sound like much, yet there is a great deal of “point free foods” which you can fill up on throughout the day.

You also learn what a correct size portion is and through the meetings, can create a support network to help you through the tough days. I have attended Weight Watchers weigh-ins and meetings in the past, and they can be fabulous. Through weekly weigh-ins, you are accountable and have more motivation to stay the course. I also enjoyed listening to speakers who had suggestions for recipes, new foods and products available to assist us all in fat loss and health maintenance.

Jenny Craig also provides healthy weight loss through a low fat meal plan. A recent Jenny Craig campaign focuses on “size healthy” featuring the gorgeous Queen Latifah. This promotes not only looking fabulous in a skimpy swimsuit, like Valerie Bertinelli, but that bigger ladies can become healthier and perhaps not be so overwhelmed with their “ideal numbers”. As we get older, everything slows down, including our metabolism. If we placed all our hopes in the ideal numbers we had at age 20, it may be unrealistic to reach them once again. Smaller goals with a healthy mindset can be more positive and keep you motivated to ultimately look the best you ever have in your life.

Jenny Craig meals are made up of 60% carbohydrates and fats and proteins constituting 20% each. I do enjoy protein and as someone who is very active, would find that I would need more than the allocated 20% of my diet. For those, though, who are self-confessed carbo-holics, this plan is for you! Another benefit is that your meals are already prepared and all you have to do is heat and eat!

Both of these programmes are examples of healthy celebrity diets low in fat. In most cases, individuals who have followed these plans have lost and maintained healthy celebrity bodies long term. Unfortunately, there are a few celebrities who were unable to fight their food demons and were unable to maintain their weight loss. I wish these stars luck in finding the answers to their inner questions and emotional health, so that they can then focus on allowing themselves the success of long term health and wellness.

In our ubiquitous search for the perfect body and optimum health, many of us have turned to pre-prepared diets like Jenny Craig and the Nutrisystem meal plan. These programmes promote eating frequent, portion controlled meals provided by the associated company.

Delivered to your doorstep, Nutrisystem provides a weight reduction programme that is high in protein and fibre and allows clients to select their meals from a wide variety of foods off of their menus. Due to the fact that the meals are selected by clients, they will hopefully enjoy eating what they have ordered, consequently stick to the easy to follow programme.

There is no shortage of foods to choose from, with dessert not being omitted from your meal plan. In addition, there is no need for planning or trying to prepare multiple meals for the whole family as the client’s food is ready to go. The most planning required is to be heat the meal (if required) and add a few basic grocery items such as fresh fruit/vegetables and dairy.
All food is portion controlled and unlimited phone and online consultations with Nutrisystem counselors, nutritionists and dieticians are free, without having to physically attend meetings.

This programme is convenient for women and men who lead busy lives and have difficulty in committing to preparing their own meals. For those who learn from visual cues should be able to lose the weight and maintain their loss.

The negatives to Nutrisystem include the cost, which is over $300 per month, and needs to be supplemented with additional groceries. Another issue could be that once a client stops ordering their meals from Nutrisystem, they may not have the skills to maintain their weight and create nutritional meal plans on their own.

Despite the negatives, the Nutrisystem meal plan is an ideal weight loss method for a great deal of people and has been so for the past 35 years.

The Nutrisystem Meal plan provides you with breakfast, lunch, dinner, a dessert and a snack every day. Fruit, salads, vegetables and dairy products will need to be provided by your local grocery store.
Every 28 days, you’ll receive your pre-prepared portioned meals. The Auto shipping feature (for individuals who need to lose more than 10 pounds) will automatically send out your supplies for the following 4 weeks.

Alternatively, you can order a single shipment, convenient for those with ten pounds or less to lose. There is also an a la carte option to purchase individual items upon the website.
Shipping tends to be prompt and food arrives in perfect condition – so no need to worry about your biscotti being broken! For the convenience of the ready to eat meals, each four week menu will set you back more than $300, including the shipping.

Most meals require minimal or no preparation. Nutrisystem will also provide you with substitute items from restaurants/fast food stores if so required. It is important, though, not to have both the nutrisystem meal and the take out option because you’re hungry.

The Nutrisystem meal plan aims to balance blood sugar levels through the frequent eating of small meals, however in some cases, clients have mentioned that they do still feel hungry on this meal plan. It is important not to give into the hunger pangs if you wish to stick to the Nutrisystem meal plan, or look for another programme that will work better for you.
