The Mayo Clinic Diet was fairly popular back in the way, but it had been tained in recent times by fake fad diets that purported to have the Mayo Clinic brand. Now the real Mayo Clinic Diet is back, and it’s better than ever. Their bestselling book The Mayo Clinic Diet was assembled by a team of health professionals to collect the best natural weight loss practices around.

The book details five good and bad habits that contribute to weight loss and weight gain. They are as follows:

Good Habits
1. Eat a healthy breakfast
2. Eat fruit and vegetables
3. Eat whole grain
4. Eat healthy fats
5. Exercise!

Bad Habits
1. Too much sugar
2. Snacking (except on fruit and vegetables)
3. Eating too much meat and dairy
4. Eating out frequently
5. Watching TV while eating

Abiding by the good habits and eliminating the bad habits can contribute to natural weight loss steadily. Additional habits they recommend are: keeping a food and exercise journal and setting goals. How appropriate then that they also have a Mayo Clinic Journal to go along with the book. Very nice!

The next part deals with living the good life. They include up to date information on the food pyramid and how best to abide by it. It also contains additional resources that can actively aid in your weight loss goals. Remember, the information contained in the book is clinically tested by a team of weight loss professionals.

The weight loss goals of each individual varies. There are some who just want to stay physically fit and maybe drop a few pounds. There are also those who are obese and want to go to a more manageable weight. Scientific research tells us that the second type of weight loss is more difficult. The average dieter loses 5-10% of their starting weight in the first 3-6 months of their program. Beyond that, it becomes much more difficult.

Over time, you will get used to exercising and dieting. Exercising creates a natural high by releasing endorphins – a feel-good chemical – into your system. This improves your mood quite a bit and can even serve as motivation to exercise the next time. Exercise also reduces cortisol levels in the body. This serves to reduce stress, and when done over a long period of time, you become less susceptible to future stress. Scientists recommend exercising for more than 30 minutes if you are highly stressed to get the maximum benefit.

Adding to the difficulty of sustaining long-term weight loss is the fact that routine can lead your body to no longer react the way it did a few months ago. Researchers believe that endorphin tolerance increases over time so the effect is lessened the longer you’ve been exercising. The body will adapt to changes so it is important to vary your routine to keep up with it. Simple changes like intensity and duration can help a great deal towards preventing stagnation from setting in. Some celebrities instruct their personal trainers to keep them guessing; they don’t know what exercises they will be doing until they start working out.

Music is also a good way to keep yourself upbeat while exercising. Be sure to mix up your exercise music to keep things fresh. Best of all, researchers have uncovered that loud music releases more feel good hormones that help keep you happy. Just another reason to bring that MP3 player or iPod to the gym!

A research team in Germany has undertaken a study to determine the effects of altitude on weight loss. The preliminary results of their test indicate that it does have an effect! Test subjects experienced increased calorie burning and improved their exercise capabilities after staying in higher altitudes for a period of time.

Researchers selected obese, middle-aged males who had a high risk of diabetes and heart disease. The subjects first stayed in Munich before heading off to Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. The men were free to eat as they pleased and their exercise consisted of slow walks inside their stations.

The results show that the men lost on average 3.5 pounds during their stay in the mountains. Also notable is the fact that they maintained the loss a month after the study. Researchers have speculated that the high altitude might have improved their test subject’s metabolism along with making exercise easier for them.

The researchers will continue their studies, this time focusing on a higher altitude mountain in Italy. University of Southern California professor Richard Bergman also notes that the state of Colorado in the United States has the highest average elavation and lowest obesity rate in the country. Comparing this with states with lower elavations and their higher rate of obesity indicates a potential correlation between high altitudes and improved weight loss.

For most of us, Casual Fridays represent a time to cut loose after a busy week at the office. It turns out that it does more than that. A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse showed that people who had a job where they wore casual clothing were more active than those who had a job requiring corporate attire.

Researchers say that those who were casually-clothed took an average of 490 steps more than their professionally-clothed counterparts. This of course translates to inreased calorie burning as moderate exercise has been shown to be very effective at improving one’s overall health. Remember that the key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume.

It should seem obvious, but it can be missed in this fast-paced world we live in. The key to leading a more active lifestlye is to put yourself in a position to be more active. Dressing casually helps in that regard because it is easier to move around rather than ambling away in uncomfortable attire.

Perhaps the best way to facilitate that is to wear a comfortable pair of shoes. This can apply to those dressed in professional-attire, moreso since their choice of footwear often makes walking around a difficult task. Bringing a comfy pair of sneakers or slippers can help. You can wear them after work (or when the boss is not around, wink wink), which will help when you immensely should you decide to take a stroll down the park.

One of the primary advantages of aerobic exercise is how it allows the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. Work out long enough and the body transforms from carb-burning to fat-burning mode.

A study conducted by the Journal of Nutrition shows the power of eating the right meal before working out. The experimenters had two groups of women. One group had cornflakes, white toast, and jam while the other group had muesli, fruit, and yogurt. Both groups consumed the same amount of calories. The report indicates that the second group lose up to 50 percent more fat after working out for about an hour.

The secret to their success? It’s because of the food they ate before the workout. Fruit and yogurt are food that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index ranks carbohydrates based on how fast they affect blood sugar levels. Food low on the index is digested slower, while food high in the index convert to blood sugar much faster.

Having low glycemic food before the workout translates to the body converting energy from fat storages instead of the carbohydrates from the food. Voila! Easy weight loss for you.

The benefits of low-glycemic food is more than easier weight loss. It is also a good way to minimize the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and blood cholesterol problems.

The best sources of low-glycemic carbs? Fruit, vegetables (other than potatoes), and whole grain bread are all excellent choices.

There are many obstacles to getting some exercise, one of which is the belief that exercising is both difficult and time-consuming. It turns out that doing moderate exercise can have great benefits for your health.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that participants who walked (as a form of moderate exercise) for three hours per week exhibited minor weight loss and improved cardiovascular functioning.

The 46 participants lost an average of nine pounds in six months. Of note is that even if the moderate exercise was discontinued, they still retained the benefits of a healthier heart.

There are plenty of opportunities in your everyday life to do some form of exercise. Walking a few blocks to a store, or using stairs instead of elevators are some examples. So the next time you think exercise doesn’t matter, think again. Just a little bit can do wonders for your health.

For most people, exercise is viewed as a necessary evil. We may not enjoy exercising, but we understand that it is an intergral component of a healthy lifestyle. As such, we go out there and just do whatever type of exercise is most conventient for us.

One reason why personal trainers and fitness experts can help us lose weight is because they can teach the right exercises for us and how to do it properly. Exercise can be classified into two categories: aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise.

The difference between these two lies in the length and the intensity of the activity. For example, a physical activity that requires a burst of strength falls under anaerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise, on the other hand, requires prolonged physical activity, often at lesser intensity.

Aerobic Exercises: Running long distances (marathon), riding a bicycle, playing tennis
Anaerobic Exercises: Running short distances (sprint), lifting weights, doing pushups and pullups

It is important to have a good mix of aerobic and anaerobic exercise. When we exercise, glycogen is converted to produce glucose (an energy source for the body). When there are no more carbohydrates to convert into glucose, the body taps into the fat reserves, which triggers something called fat metabolism. Basically, this means that the body burns fat. It takes our bodies a long time before fat metabolism is triggered, and as such, can only be done through aerobic exercise.

Anaerobic exercise has its own advantages. A steady exercise regimen of lifting weight increases the body’s muscle mass, which also increases the body’s metabolic rate. The metabolic rate refers to the speed in which fat is burned. The higher the metabolic rate, the faster fat is burned.

The next time you think of exercising, try to vary your exercises between aerobic and anaerobic. Combining these two types of exercises can make the difference in your battle against the bulge!

How do you encourage kids to exercise? Easy, by getting them to enjoy exercising.

The increasing popularity of videogames and television has in part caused a growing concern over the physical health of children all over the world. The addicting nature of watching television or playing videogames is a cause for concern, as children do not get the requisite exercise needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Wii Fit video game is perfect for kids who enjoy videogames and need exercise. Developed by Nintendo, the Wii console is unique in its motion-controlled gameplay that has proven to be a hit across people of all ages. The interactive nature of the controller makes it perfect for sports games and exercise games, with Wii Fit being one of them. Wii Fit is so popular that it has become the third best selling video game within a year of its release.

The game makes use of the peripheral Wii Balance Board. Think of it as an exercise tool that can calculate Body Mass Index (BMI), record physical tests, and guides you as you perform various exercises. There are a wide variety of exercises available – Strength-training, resistance-training, aerobic, and anaerobic. The gamer can then caluculate his or her “Wii Fit Age”, a calculation based on age, weight, and test performance.

Potential additions in the future include an ability to connect online and speak to a fitness trainer to help you with your exercise regimen. Should this happen, then it becomes that much easier to exercise regularly, as there is no more excuse of being too lazy to go the gym after a hard day’s work.

In the movie Year One, Jack Black and Michael Cera play two prehistoric men, who, through the course of history, stumble their way to fame and fortune. This got me thinking, not about the movie itself but the casting of Jack Black, “Has prehistoric man ever been depicted as being a little on the heavy side?”

Watch most every other prehistoric movie, or read history and anthropology textbooks, and you will find that it is very rare to see any of them overweight. This is in large part due to the scarcity of food available to them, but their lifestyles also played a huge part.

Prehistoric man sought food through hunting and gathering. Both of these activities required plenty of physical activity. They also didn’t have any means of transportation, leading them to walk wherever they wished to go. The elements or the depletion of resources meant that they had to look for new places to live, both of which are causes of their nomadic nature.

In the modern world today, many of us have sedentary lifestyles. We drive to work everyday, take the elevator to our office, and sometimes have food delivered to us. Children are watching more television and using computers more frequently. It’s no wonder many of us gain weight easily.

Following prehistoric man’s lead can greatly help us improve our lifestyles. Instead of making short drives to the supermarket or bookstore, walking there can be very beneficial. Taking the stairs at work is also helpful, but not if you’re at the 40th floor. There’s no need to overdo it. Incorporating exercise into our daily routines leads to a healthier and happier you.
