These days, Ellen Degeneres always needs to be in tip-top shape, with her own talk show and role as American Idol’s newest judge, she can’t afford to lack energy. To make sure she never runs out of steam, Ellen Degeneres’ work out and diet keep herself fully charged through a combination of having vegan food and regularly doing sun salutations.

Ellen Degeneres has always been very proud of being a vegan and adhering to a vegan diet. She recently further explained some details on how her diet, and what she calls ’sugar fasting’, gives her the energy she needs for her career.

Ellen Degeneres’ diet has no dairy, meat, poultry, fish, or any sort of processed food. Her all natural diet consists mainly of vegetables, beans, rice, legumes, and soups, which all combine to provide her with all the nutrition she needs. Her sugar fasting comes in the form of not taking anything sweet. She doesn’t eat any candies, cakes, cookies, or anything else with a high sugar content.

And every morning, Ellen does sun salutations, also known as Surya Namaskara. While most people will consider taking Power Yoga instead to get their energy levels up, Surya Namaskara’s calming nature seems to give Ellen more energy, as it helps her get focused so she can exert all her energies at the right outlets.

Surya Namaskara is a series of twelve asanas, or body positions, that are performed in sequence, alternately stretching the spine forward and backward. Inhalation and exhalation is a key component in the practice, done alternately as the practitioner moves in and out of an asana.

These 12 steps give a holistic treatment of the body, benefiting the joints, ligaments, and bones of the body, which improve flexibility, balance, and posture. Surya Namaskara also stimulates almost every system in the body. It touches on the cardiovascular system, oxygenating the blood and strengthening the heart, and the endocrine system, making glands like the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands, along with the testes and the ovaries, to function better. Aside from these, Surya Namaskara has mental benefits as well, relaxing and calming the mind while tension and stress is released.

It is this secret, one-two natural combo that gives Ellen Degeneres the energy she needs to get through each day.

In an era where weight losses are tracked weekly in reality shows like The Biggest Loser, it can be easy to think that losing 5-10 pounds in a pinch is the norm. These expectations are unrealistic and can lead you to regard diets that don’t achieve this as ineffective. Temper your expectations and you will find that the results can be just as good, if not better.

Health experts cite 1-2 pounds lost per week as a realistic target. Research shows that weight loss is easier when you start that diet or exercise regimen before it plateaus and weight loss becomes that much harder. This is the period when only your will and dedication can lead to good results. Remember that the formula for losing weight is simple: you need to expend more calories than you consume. Every successful diet or exercise plan either helps you expends more calories or makes you cut down on calories consumed. The key is staying focused and motivated enough to continue with the program.

The good news is that it gets easier the more you get used to your diet and exercise programs. A decrease in overall body weight also decreases the body’s energy requirements. This means that you need to consume less food that when you initially started losing weight. Exercise is also something that you will grow accustomed to. Exercising for a sufficient amount of time releases pleasure-inducing chemicals that make you feel better as you are exercising. That should be enough motivation to start exercising!

All else fails, just remember the basic formula that every dieter should start from: expend calories, consume less calories. Eat well, exercise enough, and the results should be there.

When it comes to raising children, staying on top of every little thing can often be very exhausting. And yet parents still go the extra mile for their children because they know how important it is to monitor their children.

Statistics show that the rate of obese children and teenagers are at a higher level compared to years past. A new study conducted at the Eastern Virginia Medical School indicates that chubby babies, despite looking healthy, have increased chances of growing up to be obese. Health complications, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and elevated cholesterol are also concerns.

The testing consisted of 111 children with higher than average body mass index. Researchers observed these children to gain weight during infancy at an excess rate per month when compared to the average rate. This started when the children were 3 months old. The results also show that 50% became overweight by age 2, and 90% became overweight by age 5.

Lead researcher Dr. John Harrington says that it might be time for physicians everywhere to reevaluate how to handle the diets of children even at a young age. Parents and physicians need to start combating excess weight gain at a young age to prevent it from steamrolling into something that becomes a lot more unmanageable after reaching adulthood.

A health observer also remarked that medical schools should consider the possibility of increasing awareness and information regarding diet and nutrition to aid parents and physicians ample means to combat obesity.

The Mayo Clinic Diet was fairly popular back in the way, but it had been tained in recent times by fake fad diets that purported to have the Mayo Clinic brand. Now the real Mayo Clinic Diet is back, and it’s better than ever. Their bestselling book The Mayo Clinic Diet was assembled by a team of health professionals to collect the best natural weight loss practices around.

The book details five good and bad habits that contribute to weight loss and weight gain. They are as follows:

Good Habits
1. Eat a healthy breakfast
2. Eat fruit and vegetables
3. Eat whole grain
4. Eat healthy fats
5. Exercise!

Bad Habits
1. Too much sugar
2. Snacking (except on fruit and vegetables)
3. Eating too much meat and dairy
4. Eating out frequently
5. Watching TV while eating

Abiding by the good habits and eliminating the bad habits can contribute to natural weight loss steadily. Additional habits they recommend are: keeping a food and exercise journal and setting goals. How appropriate then that they also have a Mayo Clinic Journal to go along with the book. Very nice!

The next part deals with living the good life. They include up to date information on the food pyramid and how best to abide by it. It also contains additional resources that can actively aid in your weight loss goals. Remember, the information contained in the book is clinically tested by a team of weight loss professionals.

Mayor Margaret Finlay of the Southern California city Duarte has started a “Biggest Loser” program that aims to raise awareness about the high rate of obesity in the country along with helping those affected to lose weight. There will be a final weigh in on March 29 that will showcase the results of the challenge. One of the goals is to help create similiar programs in other cities in the country.

In this weight loss competition, all Duarte residents older than 16 will weigh-in secretly. The winner will be able to choose between $100 (straight out of Finlay’s pocket) or one year’s membership at a Duarte Fitness Center.

Finlay herself has long battled her own weight loss issues. She has lost over 40 pounds in the last few years, and she aims to lose an additional 25 pounds. Finaly is also concerned about the rising number of obese children. The hope is that if adults set a good example, the children will follow suit and learn the value of living a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Councilwoman Lois Gaston is one avid supporter of the program. She expects to emerge a healthier person and has been working hard to achieve her weight loss goals.

It’s no secret that people are working more and more years. The days of working until you reached the retirement age of 62-65 are but a distant memory. Data from the United States Bureau of Statistics show that the number of workers aged 65 and over increased a hundred fold from 1997 to 2007! That is a staggeringly large amount.

There are many benefits gained from working long past the retirement age. Studies have shown that, on average, people who retire slowly start to live a more inactive and sedentary lifestyle. This can cause health risks such as weight gain and mental impairment. Working in an office can help slow the onset of such factors because the mental and physical faculties are stimulated everyday.

Companies can stand to benefit from an aging workforce, too. Research shows that workers over 55 are absent less and have greater work satisfaction. It can perhaps be attributed to the fact that these workers have, more or less, settled into their roles and are happy to just chug along nicely.

Employers should take note of the fact that health and wellness must be a focus in order to adjust to the increase in older workers. Having an exercise program in place can help reduce accidents or work-related injuries in the workplace. It also reduces the risk of heart disease by improving the immune system.

Of course, giving ample vacation time is also beneficial. Stress has been shown to have adverse effects on your health, so it is critical to let employees have some time off to help them recharge their batteries. Their work will surely improve as a result.

For most of us, Casual Fridays represent a time to cut loose after a busy week at the office. It turns out that it does more than that. A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse showed that people who had a job where they wore casual clothing were more active than those who had a job requiring corporate attire.

Researchers say that those who were casually-clothed took an average of 490 steps more than their professionally-clothed counterparts. This of course translates to inreased calorie burning as moderate exercise has been shown to be very effective at improving one’s overall health. Remember that the key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume.

It should seem obvious, but it can be missed in this fast-paced world we live in. The key to leading a more active lifestlye is to put yourself in a position to be more active. Dressing casually helps in that regard because it is easier to move around rather than ambling away in uncomfortable attire.

Perhaps the best way to facilitate that is to wear a comfortable pair of shoes. This can apply to those dressed in professional-attire, moreso since their choice of footwear often makes walking around a difficult task. Bringing a comfy pair of sneakers or slippers can help. You can wear them after work (or when the boss is not around, wink wink), which will help when you immensely should you decide to take a stroll down the park.

One of the primary advantages of aerobic exercise is how it allows the body to burn fat instead of carbohydrates. Work out long enough and the body transforms from carb-burning to fat-burning mode.

A study conducted by the Journal of Nutrition shows the power of eating the right meal before working out. The experimenters had two groups of women. One group had cornflakes, white toast, and jam while the other group had muesli, fruit, and yogurt. Both groups consumed the same amount of calories. The report indicates that the second group lose up to 50 percent more fat after working out for about an hour.

The secret to their success? It’s because of the food they ate before the workout. Fruit and yogurt are food that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index ranks carbohydrates based on how fast they affect blood sugar levels. Food low on the index is digested slower, while food high in the index convert to blood sugar much faster.

Having low glycemic food before the workout translates to the body converting energy from fat storages instead of the carbohydrates from the food. Voila! Easy weight loss for you.

The benefits of low-glycemic food is more than easier weight loss. It is also a good way to minimize the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and blood cholesterol problems.

The best sources of low-glycemic carbs? Fruit, vegetables (other than potatoes), and whole grain bread are all excellent choices.

As we get older, leading a healthier lifestyle becomes all the more important. It is at this time that the body slows down, which when compounded with a sedentary lifestyle leads to weight gain. Leading an active lifestyle is the key to preventing this.

Doctors cite moderate exercise as a better means of staying healthy rather than relying on medications. Taking a stroll around the neighborhood or the park is a simple activity that can greatly help those with advanced ages.

The focus is not on losing weight, but on staying physically fit. It makes no sense to eat less and deprive yourself of vital nutrients, especially as you grow older. The body needs vitamins and nutrients to keep it healthy. Supplements can be helpful, particuarly calcium supplements as bones grow thinner with the passage of time.

Another important benefit of exercise is with regard to the mind. Studies have shown that moderate exercise done regularly improves cognitive function and even decreases the possibility of cognitive impairment. Researchers theorize that the results stem from increased blood flow to the brain.

Of course, doing a Sudoku puzzle has the same results, so go on and try that if it’s more to your liking. Just don’t forget to get some exercise along the way, maybe by walking to the bookstore to buy the puzzle book.

Lose It! is an iPhone and iTouch application that combines the power of social networking with your weight loss efforts. Users can simply download the application from the Apple Store and start teaming up with people on Twitter and Facebook to lose weight.

The application allows users to input daily calorie budgets (goals) and keep track of what they are eating and what exercises they are doing. A searchable database makes the entire process run very smoothly. Detailed reports generate key metrics that inform you on how you are doing with your weight loss efforts.

Perhaps the best feature of Lose It! is the ability to stay in touch with friends (or meet new ones) on Facebook and Twitter. Consider it as a vast worldwide support group that allows everyone to keep each other motivated. See what other users are doing to lose weight and let their successes encourage your own efforts. Science has shown that having a weight loss buddy can improve the efficiency of your diet and exercise programs by adding accountability to the equation.

The application is tailor made for each individual. You enter pertinent information such as height, weight, and weight loss target.
