Exercising can sometimes be a boring and monotonous activity. You often see people listening to music or watching television while exercising just to occupy themselves. Its no surprise that group exercises are fast becoming a popular way to exercise.

Group exercise classes are offered by most fitness establishments and gyms. They have a variety of classes scheduled to accomodate people with varying schedules and exercise goals.

Some examples of group exercises include: aerobics, yoga, boxing, spinning, and dance. The great thing about these classes is the variety it offers. Tired of running the treadmill or lifting weights all the time? Just sign up for a yoga class. If you want to try something new, sign up for the dance class. It’s a great way to try something new and meet new people.

Speaking of meeting new people, group exercises offer many benefits, such as social benefits. More than likely, people who sign up for the various classes share the same goals as you – they want to lose weight or stay in shape. It’s a great way to meet likeminded individuals.

In a group setting, there is greater accountability in everyone. Studies have shown that people tend to stick to the program due to the support structure set in place by the group exercise programs. Signing up for a class is also a good way to ensure that you will go to that class. It shows your commitment to the exercise program and avoids missed classes.

Best of all, group exercises are fun! Unlike exercising on your own, group exercises offer plenty of interactivity. You can talk to your fellow group members or have fun keeping up with the movements and choreography.

A helpful tip is to join classes that are not too big in size. It is very easy to get lost in the shuffle in those types of classes.

As children, you probably had to endure those hourly Physical Education sessions in school. While some may not have enjoyed it, the program was a good way for children to learn the value of physical fitness.

Today, corporate fitness is on the rise. Many companies are now hiring fitness trainers to manage an exercise program for their employees. This is in line with our society’s increased emphasis on physical fitness.

These fitness trainers, or personal trainers, makes exercising more efficient. Exercising the improper way can waste both time and energy. With a personal trainer (PT) leading the way, you can perform the exercises correctly to attain the maximum benefit. You also avoid injuries caused by improper technique.

Another important contribution of PTs is their knowledge. There are many kinds of exercises available to you, some more suited for you depending on your goals. For example, building and toning muscles requires a different type of exercise program compared to losing weight and improving cardiovascular fitness.

Perhaps the most important benefit of a PT is their ability to motivate you. It improves morale when you hear something egging you on and pushing you to greater heights. This support system ensures that you will stick to your exercise program.

PTs can be found in most fitness establishments. You want to look for someone who is certified with a reputable certifying organization. You also want to find someone who listens to what you have to say. Think of a personal trainer as a teammate, not as a teacher. Collaboration is the key.

While waiting at a Chinese airport terminal, I was looking for a place to grab a quick bite at before my flight. You had your usual noodle and dimsum shops, but even more surprising was the wide selection of international brand name restaurants. I eventually settled on a Whopper at Burger King, more for the familiarity than anything else.

It’s not just the airports. While traveling around Shanghai, you get the feeling that the world around you is starting to look the same. There were the usual assortment of luxury brands in Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada. The restaurant choices were McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Yoshinoya, among others. Maybe it’s a sign of the modern age, but you had to do a lot of walking to find a good authentic Chinese restaurant in China!

Fast food is fast, inexpensive, and convenient. The drive-thru is the embodiment of this philosophy. You get in and get out with your food in a matter of minutes. And with today’s busier and faster paced lifestyles, it’s very easy to turn to develop a habit of eating fast food.

Eating fast food is not the problem in itself, it’s eating fast food all the time that causes problems. An article the January 2005 issue of The Lancet details the results of a study by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute wherein test subjects ate at fast food restaurants multiple times in a week. People who ate fast food frequently gained an additional ten pounds compared to those who only ate once per week. In addition, they had developed an increased risk for diabetes.

Fast food has become ingrained in our culture. If you’re in a foreign land and you’re not particularly adventurous when it comes to trying the local cuisine, fast food will probably be your safe haven. The point isn’t to completely avoid fast food. The point is for us to put more thought in the food we choose to eat. Instead of thinking, “I’m tired and I’m hungry, I’ll go get fast food,” we should think of healthier alternatives rather than choosing the easy way out. Be more selective in what you order. Be more selective in the fast food restaurant you choose.

We’ll next discuss ways to eat healthily at fast food restaurants.

Reality television can sometimes be used as a guide on what is currently trendy in our cultural zeitgeist. With the emergence of The Biggest Loser as a staple of reality television programming, we can then say that people are growing more conscious about weight loss. In the show, overweight contestants compete to lose weight. The person who loses the most weight at the end of the show wins a cash prize, and thusly becomes “The Biggest Loser”.

Many of the contestants have been successful in their attempts to lose weight. We can attribute this to positive mental imagery and weigh loss incentives. When people have a strong mental image of what they want to accomplish, it becomes that much easier to achieve those goals. Having incentives can certainly help your cause as well.

An example of this in action can be seen in professional sports. In this article, it describes how chronically overweight basketball player Sean May got paid $100,000 by his team, the Sacramento Kings, to lose weight!

Not all of us have access to high-end trainers and gym facilities. Still, it is very possible to apply these psychological tactics to help in weight loss. Try this sometime: Go window shopping at your favorite malls and look for some nice clothes that appeal to you. To create a positive mental imagery, imagine yourself wearing those clothes as you go to work, or, when you go on a special date. This will serve as motivation for you to shed those unwanted excess pounds!

Weight loss incentives are also within reach for us. After you’ve lost a few pounds, treat yourself to a relaxing day at the spa. You can even focus on the compliments your friends and family give you when they see that you have been losing weight. You may not get paid $100,000 for losing weight, but you will still reap the rewards when your friends and family congratulate you on a job well done.

I have a friend who is somewhat emotionally fragile. It is not uncommon to see her eating ice cream while watching television after a particularly nerve-wracking day. One time I saw her consume a whole tub of ice cream in response to getting dumped. Eating the ice cream made her feel better, gaining additional pounds afterwards did not.

With today’s busier lifestyles, some people find themselves under increasing levels of stress. This can trigger negative energy and sudden cravings, to which each of all of us react differently. Everyone has their own coping strategies. Some choose to go outside and walk their dogs to clear their minds, while some, like my friend, choose to indulge themselves in a little ice cream therapy. Emotional eaters are especially prone to binge eating, and they don’t even realize what they’re doing!

In most cases, these coping strategies have been imprinted in our minds, such that they become natural responses to the triggering events. They have been conditioned in our minds from habit and repetition. However, a subtle change in routine can have drastic effects in our behavior.

The next time you feel stressed out, instead of helping youself to a spoonful of ice cream or a chocolate bar, try doing something entirely different. Walking in the park is an excellent alternative since it doubles as a form of exercise. Do this once, then twice, then trice, and so on until you have conditioned yourself to that response. After you have successfully altered your coping strategy, you can reward yourself with some ice cream. Just try not to enjoy it too much!

If you choose to stay at hotels while travelling, you will invariably find yourself eating at a buffet. Many of the top hotels in the world make it a point of emphasis to provide an attractive buffet for hotel guests. Some buffets are so good that most of the customers are not even guests at the hotel. A lot of the buffets in these hotels have international cuisines, so there will always be plenty of choices for everyone.

In my family, there are different approaches to buffet eating. My mother and father are very frugal people, so they always want to get their money’s worth. They will scope out the available dishes and load up on the most expensive dishes. They will also keep eating until they feel they have gotten what they have paid for. Sometimes, this means eating for hours on end. They will never eat inexpensive dishes like rice and soup. You will always find them with a plate full of sea bass or lobster.

My brother and sister consider going to a buffet an experience. They are there to see all the different foods on display. As such, they make it a point to sample all the dishes, moreso if they find a new dish they haven’t tried yet. You can see the excitement building up in them as they wait in line and ask the chefs about so-and-so dish.

My uncle believes that the key to enjoying a buffet is in the strategy and tactics. He will not eat breakfast and lunch to give himself “room” for a dinner buffet. He will never drink liquids during a buffet, believing that it will cause the food he has already eaten to expand. When he wants to find out if he still has room for more food, he will place his left hand on his forehead and his right hand on his belly. Only when both are of equal rigidity will he stop eating.

If you’re not careful with how you manage your food consumption, you can end up binge eating on a lot of unhealthy foods. A simple way to control yourself while at a buffet is to understand the psychology behind our buffet eating strategies. In this article, the findings of Cornell food researcher Brian Wansink is revealed.

It turns out that how much we eat can be affected by factors such as the size of the plate, where and how close we sit to the buffet line, and what kind of utensil we use. For example, people who have smaller plates will eat less because there is less food being put on the plate. Thinking about these simple details while at a buffet can help you from eating too much, and consequently, prevent you from gaining too much weight overnight.
